Urban transit corridors present some of the most challenging environments for plant life. High temperatures, air pollution, limited water, and compacted soil create conditions that few species can tolerate. Yet these corridors represent tremendous opportunities for urban greening.

Over the past 5 years, we've worked on greening initiatives for metro rail projects in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. Here's what we've learned about selecting the right native species.

The challenge

Metro rail corridors face unique environmental stressors:

  • Heat stress: Concrete and asphalt create heat islands, with temperatures 5-8°C higher than surrounding areas
  • Air pollution: High levels of particulate matter, NOx, and other pollutants
  • Water scarcity: Limited irrigation access and high evaporation rates
  • Compacted soil: Construction activities often leave soil heavily compacted
  • Limited space: Narrow planting strips with restricted root zones

Our selection criteria

1. Drought tolerance

Species must survive with minimal supplemental irrigation after establishment. Native species like Azadirachta indica (Neem), Butea monosperma (Flame of the Forest), and Ficus religiosa (Peepal) have shown excellent drought tolerance.

2. Pollution tolerance

Plants must be able to thrive in high-pollution environments. Species with waxy leaves, dense canopies, and efficient particulate filtration are preferred.

3. Maintenance requirements

Low-maintenance species reduce long-term costs and ensure sustainability. We prioritize species that require minimal pruning, pest control, and fertilization.

4. Structural suitability

Species must have root systems that won't damage underground infrastructure and canopies that don't interfere with overhead lines.

Based on our experience, here are the most successful species:

  • Azadirachta indica (Neem) — High pollution tolerance, low maintenance
  • Delonix regia (Gulmohar) — Aesthetic value, moderate maintenance
  • Cassia fistula (Amaltas) — Drought tolerant, beautiful flowering
  • Ficus benghalensis (Banyan) — Excellent canopy, high survival rate
  • Mimusops elengi (Bakul) — Pollution tolerant, fragrant flowers
  • Terminalia arjuna (Arjun) — Native, hardy, good for urban environments
